The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language is a fantastic addition to any bookshelf. Never has a book felt like a conversation before, but Mark Forsyth knows how to use the craft of writing to create a witty and informative novel. In his book, one subject seamlessly connects to the next as the history of words unfolds across every page. If you’re anything like me and you love learning about both language and history, this will be the perfect addition to your library!
Every chapter delves into a different word and the informative (and sometimes bizarre) story behind it. From bread to Biblical terminology, Forsyth jumps around in ways that remind you of an excited friend, happy to share their eclectic knowledge with you. It’s truly a fascinating read, guiding you from one word to the next until you feel almost as passionate about the subject!
While introduced to this book in college for an assignment, it quickly became one of my favorites. History and language are two of my favorite subjects, and to read a novel where they go hand in hand was phenomenal. The way that the conversation is carried from the first page to the last creates a friendly and familiar atmosphere.
You won’t want to miss this extraordinary novel that aims to inform and amuse you. Colorful turns of phrase have surprising origins, and words that don’t seem related at all are mind-blowingly close. Who better to divulge the secrets of how words are connected than a linguist? One idea sparks another and drives you forward, learning more than you intended. The Etymologican is the epitome of the journey over the destination.
