I often struggle to find literary fiction I enjoy, but anyone who knows me knows that French history is a sweet spot. Following a modern-day story that uncovers secrets about a past kindness, Jennifer Donnelly draws the reader in with the promise of adventure and finding yourself through the eyes of someone who lived without remorse.

Flashing between modern day struggles and the French Revolution, Donnelly draws a struggling young woman together with a figure from the past to show that some things are worth fighting for, even if you’re losing. Hope will never die, and you’ll live without regret if you follow your heart.

As a lover of all things French, I thoroughly enjoyed the jumps to the past through the pages of a diary left behind. A friend in high school gifted me this book, and it was well received (Thanks, Katie!). If you’re looking for a delightful blend of modernity and the reality of revolution, this is for you.
